The Credit Union Deposit Guarantee Corporation is now hiring a Manager, Regulation & Credit Risk Assessment.

The Credit Union Deposit Guarantee Corporation is a not-for-profit public agency of the Government of Alberta that guarantees deposits and provides risk-based regulatory oversight to enable a safe and sound credit union system in Alberta.  Our primary roles include:

  • Providing a 100% guarantee of deposits held with Alberta credit unions
  • Regulating credit unions and enforcing the Credit Union Act
  • Revising, advising and directing credit unions on sound business practices
  • Monitoring credit union performance and implementing appropriate actions to improve performance and reduce risks
  • Establishing individual credit union loan approval limits and providing an appropriate adjudication process for loans that exceed these limits

We invite qualified applicants to consider joining our team, as Manager, Regulation & Credit Risk Assessment (MRCRA).

This position reports to the Assistant Vice President, Regulation and Credit Risk Assessment and  is primarily responsible for adjudicating credit applications and loan transactions for assigned credit unions to confirm acceptable risks are underwritten while  meeting  prevailing  quality  and  policy  guidelines.  The MRCRA  is  a  credit  specialist  and  monitors underwriting and credit risk management trends at assigned credit unions and confirms appropriate credit risk  practices  are  in  place  at  credit  unions.    The  MRCRA  makes  recommendations  for  improvements  to  assigned  credit  union’s  credit  risk  management  practices  and  then  ensures  those  recommendations  are  implemented.   Key responsibilities include: credit adjudication and monitoring, credit risk identification and mitigation, communicating with various levels of management and Boards of Directors within the credit union system to address risk findings, and promoting the safety and soundness of the Alberta credit union system.

  • Adjudicates credit applications within assigned lending limits and completes loan transaction reviews for assigned credit unions to ensure acceptable risks are underwritten within existing Service Level Objectives.
  • Confirms credit risk management trends and appropriate credit risk practices are in place at credit unions by off-site credit risk monitoring and on-site or remote risk reviews.
  • Leads or supports credit risk assessment for 2-3 credit unions/year, with approximately 1 week in duration on-site or remote for risk reviews.
  • Prepares accurate and meaningful internal documentation and external credit risk assessment reports.
  • Fosters a culture of shared, proactive risk management, and provides guidance and advice on credit union regulations and lending guidelines.
  • Consults proactively on emerging issues with assigned credit unions and develops recommendations for changes to guidelines, procedures and best practices.
  • Works independently and as part of a team assists with the department workflow and assigned projects.
  • Travel required to credit unions within Alberta.


  • 7+ years of recent job related lending experience in a Canadian financial institution in commercial and consumer credit underwriting and credit adjudication with experience in mid-sized commercial loans with a broad scope in industries including commercial real estate, hospitality, and agriculture.
  • Bachelor’s and/or advanced degree in a financial sector related area of study. Risk management certification is an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Knowledge of applicable financial sector legislation is an asset.
  • Understanding of/experience with the credit union system is an asset.
  • Experience in the interpretation and administration of credit policy and guidelines.
  • Strong communication (e.g. verbal, active listening, written), presentation, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
