Alberta Central Future Leader Scholarships

Alberta Central believes in supporting our employees and system partners. By providing scholarships we are helping to build future leaders and deepen understanding of the credit union system.

For 2024 we are pleased to offer five Alberta Central Future Leader Scholarships, each valued at $5,000, for the following categories:

  • One scholarship open to children of Alberta Central employees or board members.
  • Four scholarships open to children of credit union employees or credit union board members.

Please note: For children outside the credit union system, Credit Unions of Alberta offers one Future Leader of Alberta Scholarship  open to any Alberta-based student. Children of Alberta Central or credit union employees or board members are not eligible to apply. 

Scholarship Eligibility:

  • Any child of an employee or board member from one of the following organizations is welcome to apply:
    • Alberta Central
    • An Alberta credit union
  • Students can be entering any year of a post-secondary degree, diploma, certificate or trade program (including undergraduate and post-graduate programs).
  • Programs can be based anywhere in the world (not just Alberta or Canada), as international programs are accepted.

Application requirements and timeline:

  • Complete the online application form below between June 28 and August 31, 2024.
    • Included in the application form you must consent to the collection of personal data and to the sharing of your name, photo and biography on Alberta Central/Credit Unions of Alberta digital properties and/or social media channels if you are selected as the recipient.
  • Included in the application form is the submission of the following items, also required by August 31:
    • Answer four short essay questions;
    • Attach a reference letter from a community member (reference letters from family members will not be accepted); and
    • Attach proof of post-secondary acceptance (e.g., acceptance letter or transcript).
  • Judges from Alberta Central will review all applications and select a recipient no later than September 30, 2024, with funds distributed by October 31, 2024.

Scholarship application:

The Alberta Central Future Leader Scholarship requires applicants to complete a form (below), which includes four short-answer essay questions. Please be advised: you will need to complete and submit your application in one session so we suggest preparing your submission in a separate document before filling out the online form. Below please find the questions and the points assigned to each.

Essay questions:

  • Explain the goal of your current or future post-secondary studies, including outlining what you are studying and why you picked this field or focus area? (Worth 10 points)
  • What are you hoping to achieve when you have completed your post-secondary studies and why do you think you will be successful? (Worth 20 points)
  • As a “future leader” of Alberta, how have you demonstrated leadership in the past? Please provide an example of how you demonstrated leadership at school or at home or as a member of your community. What was the outcome of your leadership and how did it make you feel to act as a leader? (Worth 30 points)
  • A primary focus of credit unions is supporting the communities they operate in, either through donations, sponsorships or with volunteer hours at local organizations. Please provide an example of how you have given back to your community, either by volunteering your time, raising funds or providing expertise or services to a local group. Include what was involved and the outcome/impact it had. (Worth 40 points)

Scoring:

Applications will be reviewed and scored based on the point allocations noted above, as well as the following criteria:

  • Applicant has completed all elements of the application and submitted all required materials on time and in full.
  • Applicant has demonstrated thought and attention to their goals for post-secondary studies and has considered what it means to be successful or what they want to achieve in their studies.
  • Applicant clearly understands what it means to be a leader and has explained, with examples, how they demonstrate leadership or leadership qualities in their day-to-day lives and what the outcome was of their leadership and/or lessons they learned.
  • Applicant demonstrates, with examples, of how they support their community, including what their support involved and what their support or help accomplished for the community at large.

In order for your application to be considered complete you must submit proof of enrollment (e.g., acceptance letter or transcript) for your postsecondary institution as well as a reference letter from a community member who can speak to your leadership qualities and achievements (reference letters from family members will not be accepted). If you have issues adding attachments, please email them to communications@albertacentral.com by August 31, 2024 in order to complete your application.

Certification and acceptance (copy)

Conditions of Acceptance: successful recipients of any Alberta Central Scholarship will be required to submit a photo and brief response as to what it means to receive the scholarship that will be shared on Alberta Central’s internal/external digital properties and social media channels. Successful recipients will also be required to provide their Social Insurance Number in order to be granted funds.
